058-Johnny Depp And Orlando Bloom Made My Girlfriend Play A Card Game

So the fine fine folks at Upper Deck Entertainment have made a Pirates of the Caribbean Trading Card Game. This weekend I picked up a couple of starter decks, at...the request of Jennifer. Who has no intrest in role-playing games of any kind. See it all started while we were at Target on Sunday and I went over by the card section to see if they had boosters of the new HeroClix set. Well Jennifer saw the Wiz Kids Pirates game that is packs of heavy duty cardboard pirate ships that you build and then play a game with. Jennifer picked up a couple of packs and said we should start playing. I was blown away...Jennifer wants to play a game like this??

So we get to the registers and I start saying look how bad they are ripping off the Disney movies...even naming the new expansion after Davy Jones the villain of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. She looked puzzled and then I said...you know they are coming out with a card game for the movie. That's when realization set in, and she said...this isn't the same thing? I broke her heart and told her no, and she said oh ok put them back then.

We came home and I checked out the website for Upper Deck's Pirates card game, and saw that it was part of their Quickstrike system. Very similar to Sabertooth's UFS system that has Soul Caliber, Street Fighter, and the guys from Penny Arcade fighting each other. Meaning you COULD just play Street Fighter or Penny Arcade, but they are all completely compatible with each other. I found out that the game was already out, and available at Wal Mart. So we hopped over to the Wal Mart and sure enough we found Starter Decks of the game.

Now.....really...honestly Card Games are not so hot right now. With Wizards of the Coast and Upper Deck really the only ones making games right now that anyone is playing. Wizards has Magic and Pokemon and Upper Deck has Vs. System and the insanely popular Yu Gi Oh. After seeing the packaging for the Pirates game I can see why they are doing so well. See I have been playing collectable card games for over a decade and I have never seen a starter deck like this.

So check that out it's like a DVD case on steroids, but wait until you see the inside.

There is a spot inside to hold the rulebook and playmat. Then a clear cover protects TWO 60 Card decks. It's fantastic. I have never seen anything like it. Too bad the game is kind of mediocre. Yeah....it's not that great. You don't even have a hand in this game. You play cards off the top of your deck, and when they say Quickstrike they mean it. I don't think a game we have played yet has gone more than 20 minutes. So I cursed this cool ass starter deck packaging....until I saw this:

That's right...the World of Warcraft Starters will use the same packaging!!!! That game comes out October 25th and I will definately be picking up a starter and a few boosters now. Good job UDE!

Hey, if you want more information on the PotC game, head over to Pojo.com!

Nice pics, BTW - my wife likes the PotC game too...and she hates pretty much every game.
