So Cursive have a new album out. It's called "Happy Hollow" and there are no words for it. It's insane. Maybe that's a good word for it. See to me Cursive is one of the most important bands on the planet right now. Their last album "The Ugly Organ" is not only in the top five best albums ever, but it helped to shape me, and possibly even save my life. To me it is a piece of musical perfection, nothing could make it better, nothing could touch it. In 2004 Cursive kinda sorta maybe announced they were breaking up, I was bummed, but I wondered how they could top "Ugly Organ". Then in 2005 when they announced that they had just needed some time off and were going to start working on a new album, I got a little nervous. Later that year they released the B-Sides collection "The Difference Between Houses and Homes" which I bought and enjoyed but it wasn't a new album so it just kind of blipped my radar. Then in early '06 Cursive said that they had asked Cello player Gretta Cohn to leave the band. Now ask any Cursive fan and they would tell you the Cello was pretty integral to the sound on "The Ugly Organ". So I got kind of nervous especially when they said they would not be replacing her. I thought...well...maybe it's a good thing. Maybe Cursive will just rock out on the new album. Well....not quite cause next thing you know, Cursive has a horn section. Yes, those kind of horns. I thought well "The Ugly Organ" means so much to me that I will probably just buy the new album out of respect listen to it once and be done with it.
NO WAY IN HELL. Even after just one listen it's possible that Cursive has TOPPED "The Ugly Organ" on "Happy Hollow". The horn section sounds like it should have always been a part of the band's sound. Like I said, unfortunately there are no words to describe the album it just has to be heard. Their MySpace page is a good place to start though.
Maybe it's just me, I mean each of their albums has now defined a moment in time for me, but hopefully Cursive is universal and you can listen to any of their album and find an intimate way to connect with the music like I have.
