Let's make one thing very clear. I will not for any reason spend $599 on a video game console. I will also not spend $499 on a video game console. Sony's 2007 has been nothing but missteps and putting their foots in their mouths.
Today...they blew me away. Home(which was pretty much the whole conference) is a mind blowing idea, that if it works half as well as it did today at the press event will be the biggest thing...since...well...the Wii. Home which let's you create a pretty dammed realistic avatar of yourself and then own a home, and walk around a city. Talking to other people like a giant 3D chat room, but it doesn't even come close to ending there. You can watch movie/game trailers in the local theater or in your "home". Games are going to have their own buildings, and you can meet up with other residents in those buildings and play against them online. Then when your done go back to that building essentially creating communities for those specific games. That's fucking genius.
The PSP is getting a redesign, sort of. It's going to be slimmer and lighter, but that's really it. You can also hook it up to a high def TV and show off your games and movies on a TV which is actually pretty awesome. I was still saying to myself, you know I don't think I want another PSP(I owned one, and found myself with no games to play so I sold it) until they revealed that the new Star Wars: Battlefront game is going to be a PSP exclusive, and you can buy it in a bundle with a Darth Vader emblazoned PSP for $199. I might bite.
Another pretty big announcement was that NCSoft was going to create their games for the PS3 exclusively, I smell Guild Wars 2 for PS3 from a mile away. That's actually going to be really cool, cause Guild Wars is one of my favorite games, and it's free to play so it works perfectly with an online console. Guild Wars PC players plus PS3 players would mean the game would be a tad more populated than it is right now, and that's a good thing.
Bad news for me(sort of) Unreal 3 WILL be exclusive to PS3(this year?) but I'm not too concerned I have a PC.
MGS 4 looks great, but got pushed back into early '08 so Sony is going to get ripped for that one.
A lot of the third party stuff looks really good for the PS3, I don't know so much about for the PSP, but I think the PS3 definitely has a much stronger line up than before today.
Finally Killzone 2 looks awesome it's definitely a system seller, just not for me. I still don't think I can bite at $499, but trust me, after seeing Killzone 2 in action my resolve is weakened. Out of all 3 of the media events I have to give this one to Sony they completely did a 180 from last year's event(they even made fun of it a bit) and are going into 2008 with a solid line up, a lower price point, and probably a lot of converts.
